Swim Meets 101

ARRIVAL TIME: Please arrive at the pool on time for all meets.

  • Home Meets
    • SCSC Warm Up: 4:00pm
    • Meet Start: 5:00pm
  • Away Meets
    • SCSC Warm Up: 4:30pm
    • Meet Start: 5:00pm

Coaching:

  • During the meet, coaches will be on deck assisting swimmers with their starts and reminding them of the specifics for each race, such as stroke type and sequence. Please give them the space to focus on these tasks.

  • Parents who aren’t on a volunteer shift should avoid the start and finish areas, including for 6U swimmers. Our coaches have plenty of experience corralling and encouraging our youngest swimmers during meets, so please give them space to do their job.

What to Bring:

  • Pack a team swimsuit, cap, goggles (bringing a spare is a smart move!), team t-shirt, towel, and sunscreen. Be sure to label everything clearly with your child’s name.

  • The concession stand offers food and drinks during meets, and all pools allow outside food. You’re also welcome to bring your own food from home for the evening.

  • Bring folding camp chairs for seating and a canopy for shade if you have one. Spectators can “tailgate” on the lawn or in the parking lot outside the pool area until it’s time for their swimmer’s event, then head to the pool deck to watch. After the event, please return to your tailgate spot to help avoid crowding on the pool deck.

  • You can get the heat sheet printed from the website or access it through the SwimTopia Mobile App.
  • Use a black Sharpie marker to write your swimmer’s name and events directly on them before the meet. Our coaches and coordinators are always happy to help.
    • For all swimmers, please have their events/heats/lanes on their arms.
    • Make a grid with each event listed:
      Event # | Heat # | Lane # | Stroke
      (Stroke is optional)

Volunteers:

  • If you’ve signed up to volunteer, please check in with our volunteer coordinator as soon as you arrive at the pool. The meet can feel like organized chaos, so the best time to make sure all volunteer shifts are covered and everything runs smoothly is before the meet begins.
  • The summer league season features up to six dual meets against other local teams. Each family is expected to fill two volunteer slots, and SCSC will charge $50 per session for families that don’t meet their volunteer commitments, which is equal to the $100 opt-out fee.

Swim Meet Dynamics:

  • Swimmers might be asked to swim a stroke they’re not fond of. Our coaches and coordinators put a lot of thought into meet lineups, and if we assign your child a stroke, it’s because we know they can handle it! Encourage your child to approach meets with a positive, “can-do” attitude. We believe swimmers grow through practice and by trying new strokes at meets!

  •  Our coaches will line up swimmers in order to get them into their lane at the correct time. The announcer will anouce the event and heat over a loud speaker to notify spectators and swimmers. There will also be an event board on deck that will show the current event number.

  • Disqualifications (DQs) are a normal part of swim meets at any level, and even the most experienced swimmers get them from time to time. A DQ simply means there’s a small adjustment needed in the swimmer’s start, stroke, turn, or finish technique. They’re best approached with a positive attitude, empathy, and plenty of encouragement.

Being a great swim parent is all about staying positive and encouraging. Always show respect and good sportsmanship toward coaches, officials, opponents, and teammates. Focus on celebrating your child’s effort and pointing out the positives, while leaving performance and technique advice to the coach. One of the best things you can say after a meet is, “I loved watching you swim today!”
